They can be for 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years. 10 year visas are for former Indian nationals.

Business cover letter on company's letterhead
- Required for ALL business visa applicants. Letter must indicate the
validity that is being requested (6 months, 1 year, 5 year, or 10 year visa).

additional letter from the company in India inviting the person and specifying
that they are engaged in a Joint Venture. This cannot be an email.

Letter confirming admission from an Educational Institution along with evidence of financial arrangements for stay in India. In case of admission in medical or paramedical courses in India, a letter of Approval or No objection certificate from the Ministry of Health, Government of India, is also required. Similarly, for admission to graduate or post-graduate courses in engineering/ technical institutions in India, a letter of approval or a No objection certificate from the Ministry of Human Resources Development (Department of Education) is required.

Invitation Letter: Letters of invitation from the organizer of the conference in
India as well as from the organization in the USA which nominated the applicant
to attend the conference must be included.
